22.07.2004 - A delegation of the Council of Europe's Committee for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (CPT) recently carried out a week-long visit to "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". The visit began on 12 July 2004. It was the Committee's fifth visit to this country.
The visit focussed on three issues: the treatment of persons deprived of their liberty by the law enforcement agencies; the related issue of accountability; and the situation in remand prisons.
The visit was carried out by the following members of the CPT:

They were supported by Bojana URUMOVA of the CPT's Secretariat and assisted by Dan DERMENGIU, Professor, Chair of Forensic Medicine Department, Medical Faculty "Carol Davila", Bucharest, Romania.
During the visit, the delegation held talks with Siljan AVRAMOVSKI, the Minister for the Interior, as well as with senior officials from the Ministries of Justice, the Interior, and Foreign Affairs. It also met Aleksandar PRCEVSKI, the Prosecutor-General, as well as judicial authorities.
