06.10.2004 - A delegation of the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) carried out a visit to Moldova from 20 to 30 September 2004. It was the Committee's third periodic visit to Moldova, the previous visits having taken place in 1998 and in 2001.
The CPT's delegation examined developments as regards the treatment of persons detained by the police and the situation in prison establishments; it also reviewed the management of prisoners suffering from tuberculosis.
In the course of the visit, the delegation met relevant ministerial authorities, in particular Victoria IFTODI, Minister of Justice. The delegation also had a fruitful meeting with Valeriu BALABAN, Chief Public Prosecutor.
The visit was carried out by the following members of the CPT:
