Strasbourg, 31.05.2007 - The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) has published today the report on its first visit to Monaco, which was carried out in March 2006, together with the response of the Government of Monaco. These documents have been made public at the request of the Monegasque authorities.
The report contains, in particular, recommendations to strengthen fundamental safeguards against ill-treatment of persons deprived of their liberty by the police, and to improve the conditions of detention in Monaco remand prison, the only prison establishment in the Principality. The situation of involuntary psychiatric patients is also examined. The response of the Government of Monaco describes the measures taken to implement the Committee’s recommendations.
The CPT’s visit report and the response of the Government of Monaco are available on the Committee’s website: http://www.cpt.coe.int
