First Anti-Torture Committee report on Georgia
The Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) has issued its first
report on Georgia. In May 2001 the Committee visited a number of civil and
military detention centres and psychiatric facilities in the capital Tbilisi,
and the towns of Kutaisi, Gori, Poti and Tskaltubo. Its recommendations deal
with improving professional training for police officers, strengthening
safeguards against the ill-treatment of people held in police custody, and the
systematic investigation of complaints by detainees. The Georgian government,
which requested the publication of the report, is preparing its response to the
points raised by the Committee. That response will also be made public.
