Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee
publishes report on
the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man

Strasbourg, 04.03.2005 - The Council of Europe's Committee for the prevention of torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment (CPT) has today published the report on its visit to the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man in May 2003, together with the response of the United Kingdom Government. These documents have been made public with the agreement of the United Kingdom authorities.

Prison overcrowding in England was one of the main reasons for the Committee's visit. The CPT's delegation also reviewed developments concerning detention by the police and prisons in Scotland and the Isle of Man, and visited detention facilities for children in Scotland and the Isle of Man, as well as a psychiatric establishment in Scotland.

The CPT's visit report and the response of the United Kingdom authorities are available on the Committee's website: http://www.cpt.coe.int
