Council of Europe Anti-Torture Committee publishes report on the
Czech Republic
Strasbourg, 12.03.2004 - The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention
of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) has published
today the report on its visit to the Czech
Republic in April 2002, together with the Czech Government's response.
These documents have been made public with the agreement of the Czech
authorities.
During this visit, the CPT's delegation reviewed measures taken by the Czech
authorities in response to the recommendations made by the Committee after the
1997 visit, in particular as regards the safeguards offered to persons detained
by the police. Issues tackled for the first time in the Czech Republic included
the conditions of stay in holding facilities for foreigners, as well as the
treatment of psychiatric patients.
