27.04.2004 - A delegation of the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) recently carried out a ten-day visit to Austria. The visit, which began on 14 April 2004, was the Committee's fourth periodic visit to Austria.
During the visit, the CPT's delegation followed up issues examined during previous visits, in particular the safeguards provided to persons detained by the police and the treatment of foreign nationals held under the aliens legislation. The delegation also reviewed the conditions of detention of juvenile prisoners and examined the situation of prisoners sentenced to undergo psychiatric treatment.

In the course of the visit, the delegation held consultations with Dieter BÖHMDORFER, Minister for Justice, Maria RAUCH-KALLAT, Minister for Health and Women Affairs, and Ernst STRASSER, Minister for the Interior, as well as with senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior and Justice. Discussions were also held with Peter KOSTELKA of the Austrian Ombudsman Board and Erwin FELZMANN, Chairman of the Human Rights Advisory Board.
At the end of the visit, during talks with senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior and Justice, the CPT's delegation provided the Austrian authorities with its preliminary observations.
